AEO · the playbook

How to rank on ChatGPT and Google AI Mode.

Answer engine optimization, or AEO, is the work of making an AI engine recommend your products when a shopper asks. It replaced classic SEO for discovery because shoppers now ask ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Google AI Mode instead of scrolling a results page, and those engines read your catalog as structured data, not marketing prose. Rank in them by making your catalog readable: map every product to a real taxonomy, write the attributes an agent filters on, and get cited across the web.

The core idea

A shopper reads the marketing. An agent reads the fields.

A shopper sees a headline about radiant skin. An agent reads oily skin, vitamin C 15 percent, unscented, vegan, 30ml. The agent can only match on the structured fields, so if those fields are empty, your product loses the query no matter how good the copy is. AEO is the work of filling those fields and making the whole catalog machine-readable, so the answer an engine gives is your product.

The method

The seven things that decide whether AI recommends you.

Do these in order. The early ones are the catalog foundation the later ones stand on.

01

Map your catalog to a real taxonomy

Map every product to the Shopify Standard Product Taxonomy, so an agent knows what each product is, not just what you named it. A category leaf is the first thing an engine matches on.

02

Fill the attributes AI filters on

Write the structured fields an agent needs, material, fit, use case, compatibility, dietary, into your Shopify metafields. Agents match on fields, not sentences, so each filled attribute is one more match point.

03

Write answer-first copy

Lead every product and page with the direct answer a shopper is asking for, then the detail. An engine lifts the answer at the top, not the brand story three paragraphs down.

04

Serve clean, readable HTML

Server-render your pages so an agent reads the content without running JavaScript, and keep the deciding facts in the HTML. If the fact only appears after a script runs, assume the agent never saw it.

05

Expose structured data

Add Product schema, a clean sitemap, and an llms.txt, so engines can index your catalog and cite it. Structured data is how you hand an agent the facts instead of hoping it parses them.

06

Earn citations across the web

Get named on the sources agents read: reviews, roundups, Reddit, and press. Recommendation follows recognition, and an engine trusts a product the wider web already talks about.

07

Measure and close the gaps

Score how agent-ready your catalog is, fix the missing attributes, and repeat. What you can measure, you can improve, and the gaps are where you are losing queries today.

Do it yourself, or automate it

You can do all of this by hand. Or install the tool that does it.

Steps one, two, and five are catalog work, mapping the taxonomy, writing attributes to metafields, and exposing structured data. That is exactly what Atomz automates. It reads your catalog, maps it to the Shopify Standard Product Taxonomy, and writes the structured attributes into your own metafields, then runs AI search and a grounded assistant on that readable catalog. The free audit scores your readiness first, so you see the gap before you spend anything.

AEO: questions operators ask

What is AEO?+

AEO, answer engine optimization, is the practice of getting AI engines like ChatGPT, Google AI Mode, and Perplexity to recommend your products when a shopper asks a question. Where SEO optimized for a ranked list of links, AEO optimizes for being the answer an engine gives directly.

How do I improve my ChatGPT ranking?+

Make your catalog readable to an agent. Map products to a real taxonomy, write structured attributes into your metafields, lead with answer-first copy, serve clean server-rendered HTML with Product schema, and earn citations across the web. ChatGPT recommends the products it can match on structured fields and the brands the web already talks about.

Is AEO different from SEO?+

It overlaps but is not the same. SEO earns a position in a list of ten blue links. AEO earns a place in a single generated answer, which depends far more on structured, machine-readable data and citations than on keywords and backlinks alone.

Do I need an AEO agency to do this?+

No. Most of AEO is catalog work that can be automated. Atomz maps your catalog and writes the attributes into your Shopify metafields for you, and shows a free readiness score first, so you can see the gap before you pay an agency a retainer to do it by hand.

How long does AEO take to show results?+

The catalog work is fast, often live in days. Being cited and recommended by an engine takes longer, because it depends on recrawls and on the web recognizing you. Fixing the catalog first is what makes every later signal count.
