The Shopify Catalog Visibility Report

How AI shopping agents read your products, and where they go blind.

Independent research that reads the Shopify catalog the way an AI shopping agent does. Agents recover most descriptive text, but almost nothing is filterable, so when a shopper's request becomes a hard constraint there is nothing to match on.

62,389 products · 3,776 brands · 6 categories · not affiliated with Shopify

6%

are structured as a filterable option: almost nothing can be hard-filtered

are missing, stated nowhere, so the agent cannot recover them at all

28%

precision when a shopper uses negation: “fragrance-free” still returns fragrance

About the research

What is the Catalog Visibility Score?+

It is the share of a product's demand attributes that are stated where an AI shopping agent can read them, averaged across a catalog. It measures how legible a catalog is to an agent, not sales or revenue. The average Shopify catalog scores 62 out of 100.

How was the research done?+

Every product was read the way an AI shopping agent reads it, through Shopify's public catalog, capturing the specifications, features, options and price the agent receives. For each attribute we recorded whether it is filterable, merely findable in text, or missing. Live shopper queries were then put through the same agent surface and scored against what was asked. No generative model was used in the measurement.
