Agentic commerce, explained for Shopify operators

By Ankit Minocha, founding team at Atomz. Updated May 12, 2025.

Discovery is moving from browsing to asking. Here is what agentic commerce means for your catalog, in plain terms.

Agentic commerce is shopping where an AI agent does the finding. The shopper asks a question. The agent reads catalogs and answers with a product. Your job changes from designing a browse experience to making your catalog readable to the agent doing the asking.

What changed

Browsing assumed a human clicking through collections, while asking assumes an agent matching a query against structured data, and the store that answers the question wins the sale.

What it means for your catalog

The catalog is the API of commerce. If your products carry structured attributes, an agent can match them, but if they carry only marketing prose, the agent has nothing to match on.
