Shopify's AI assistant vs Atomz AI Assistant
By Ankit Minocha. Founder, Atomz. Updated June 17, 2026.
Shopify now ships two different AI assistants, and they are easy to confuse with each other and with Atomz. The Spring 2026 Edition added an AI sales associate inside Shopify Inbox on the storefront, and Sidekick is the assistant inside the admin that helps you run the store. Atomz AI Assistant is a third thing again. Sorting out which does what is the whole point of this page.
Three assistants, three jobs
| Assistant | Where it lives | Who it serves | What it does |
|---|---|---|---|
| Sidekick | Shopify admin | You, the merchant | Generates content, builds, runs admin tasks |
| Shopify Inbox AI sales associate | Storefront chat | The shopper | Answers product questions from the catalog |
| Atomz AI Assistant | Storefront | The shopper | Grounded shopping agent, in your brand voice, that converts |
Sidekick is not a competitor to Atomz at all. It is the admin copilot, and it is genuinely useful. The comparison that matters is the storefront one: Shopify Inbox's AI sales associate versus the Atomz assistant.
Inbox AI vs Atomz, on the storefront
The Inbox sales associate is a real upgrade for stores already on Inbox, and it answers product questions from the catalog for free. Where Atomz differs is depth and grounding. The Atomz assistant is built to convert, not just to answer: it holds a conversation in your brand voice, it is grounded in your enriched catalog so it gets fit and compatibility right, and it never offers a product you do not sell.
| Inbox AI sales associate | Atomz AI Assistant | |
|---|---|---|
| Answers product questions | Yes | Yes |
| Grounded in enriched, taxonomy-mapped catalog | Reads the catalog as-is | Reads your enriched attributes |
| Brand voice control | Limited | You set the tone |
| Built to convert, not just answer | Basic | Yes |
| Quality depends on | Catalog completeness | Catalog completeness |
Notice the last row is the same for both, which is the real lesson. Neither assistant is smarter than the catalog under it. An assistant grounded in a thin catalog gives thin answers, whether it is Shopify's or anyone's.
What neither of them is
Worth saying plainly: none of these is a support helpdesk. They answer 'which one should I buy,' not 'where is my order.' For returns, refunds, and order tracking you run a dedicated helpdesk alongside whichever shopping assistant you choose.
The deciding factor
The assistant question is downstream of the catalog question. Inbox AI is a fine, free starting point. Atomz is the move when you want a grounded, brand-voiced agent that converts, and when you have done the catalog work that makes any assistant worth talking to.
