Something caught my attention recently. More people are using ChatGPT to shop for health supplements, but nobody's really testing how the biggest wellness brands actually show up in these AI-powered searches.
So I decided to run an experiment. I picked Athletic Greens (AG1), the $100M+ brand that dominated the greens powder market with celebrity endorsements and aggressive marketing, and tested how visible they are when someone uses ChatGPT to find daily nutrition supplements.
Athletic Greens appeared in only 3 out of 12 purchase scenarios I tested. Despite being the most recognizable greens brand, they were completely absent from searches like "buy daily vitamins for energy boost."
Before diving into the Athletic Greens results, you can check your brand's general AI readiness right now.

What appeared:
Micro Factor Powder ($69.99), AG1 Greens Powder Supplement ($156.60), Ancient Nutrition Organic SuperGreens + Multivitamin ($40.77)

My take:
Good positioning when probiotics are specifically mentioned, aligning with AG1's comprehensive formula messaging.
The standout finding: Bloom Nutrition appeared in multiple search results across different categories, while Athletic Greens only appeared when searches specifically aligned with their premium positioning (gut health, immunity, probiotics).
Why this might be happening: Athletic Greens excels in comprehensive, clinical-backed searches but struggles in price-sensitive, single-benefit, or mainstream vitamin categories. Their premium positioning ($158 vs competitors at $20-60) creates AI categorization constraints.
Working theory: Newer brands like Bloom Nutrition ($26.97) may have better structured product data and clearer category associations, while Athletic Greens' premium positioning limits their discovery in broader wellness searches.
The specialization trade-off: Athletic Greens dominates when searches align with their specific positioning (comprehensive nutrition, gut health, premium quality) but struggles with broader category discovery and value-conscious shoppers.
Category performance breakdown:
The Bloom factor: This newer brand appeared across green powder, superfood, and gut-friendly searches. Their consistent presence at a lower price point suggests ChatGPT associates them with broader, more accessible wellness categories.

See how your brand performs across multiple AI systems. Then manually test the 12-query framework above.
For established brands: Brand recognition and marketing spend don't guarantee AI discovery across all relevant categories. Athletic Greens' 25% visibility shows even market leaders have significant gaps.
For premium-positioned brands: High pricing can limit AI discovery in price-conscious searches. You need structured product data that clearly communicates value beyond price to AI systems.
The catalog factor: Brands with detailed product catalogs containing clear health benefits, ingredient lists, and use case descriptions appear to have advantages in AI discovery over those relying primarily on brand recognition.
